Learn France: capital, flag and map recall
Connect Paris, the French tricolour and metropolitan France on a map with a short look-cover-recall exercise.
Try the recall exerciseFrance: your starting facts
- Map scope
- Metropolitan France; overseas France is outside this crop
- Natural Earth map data France — European Union
Start with the place
Metropolitan France highlighted in gold in western Europe, with Paris marked in the north. Simplified boundaries; use the labels as learning anchors.
Look closely at the flag
Both flags use blue, white and red. France uses vertical bands; the Netherlands uses horizontal bands. Start with orientation before trying to remember a colour order.
Look, cover, recall: three different clues
Paris may already be familiar, but a country-capital pair is only one part of knowing a place. Use the map to connect the name France to an outline in western Europe, then attach Paris to that country. The image is a regional crop of metropolitan France. It does not show all the French overseas regions and territories, so do not use this outline as a complete picture of the French Republic.
Now compare the two flags. Naming colours alone will not separate them: both use red, white and blue. Describe the direction of the bands first. On the French flag, read from the hoist side: blue, then white, then red. On a normally displayed image the hoist is at the left. This gives you a concrete visual cue rather than a vague memory of three colours.
Use three anchors in order: place → city → flag. Point to France, say Paris, then trace the three vertical bands in the air. This is a suggested practice routine, not a guarantee of recall.
- Study the map and say “France—Paris” once. Cover the country name and point to its outline.
- Look at the French and Dutch flags. Cover the labels and identify the one with vertical bands.
- Close the reference and answer the three questions below. Return after a break and repeat without looking first.
Look → cover → recall
Try 3 questions about France
Move away from the reference and type your answers. Capitalisation, accents and extra spaces are ignored. You can reveal an answer if you are unsure; revealed answers do not earn a recall point.
Questions to practise without a screen
- What is the capital of France?
- Are the bands on the French flag vertical or horizontal?
- Which colour is at the hoist side of the French flag?
Reveal answers and explanations
- France’s capital is Paris.
- The French flag has vertical blue, white and red bands.
- Blue is beside the hoist, followed by white and red.
Cover the answers before you begin. Say or write each response, then open the key to check it. A successful attempt immediately after reading is a start; return after a break to see what you remember. The score here describes only these questions.
References and scope
Facts checked against the references on 2026-09-22. The map is simplified and the flag artwork uses a 4:3 display format. The country-specific lesson and answers are maintained as structured content; a shared template assembles the page.
