Look for the double cross on three hills on the flag. On the map, Slovakia lies south of Poland and north of Hungary. Its other neighbours are Czechia, Austria and Ukraine. It is landlocked.
Geography without the mix-ups
Two similar names. Two different countries. Learn the difference through four clues: flag, map location, capital and neighbours. Take as much time as you need.

Try the flag, map, capital and neighbour questions before reading the comparison below. Your result measures this round, not lasting mastery.
Look for the double cross on three hills on the flag. On the map, Slovakia lies south of Poland and north of Hungary. Its other neighbours are Czechia, Austria and Ukraine. It is landlocked.
Look for the mountain, waves and three stars on the flag. Slovenia lies south of Austria, alongside Italy, Hungary and Croatia. It has a short Adriatic coastline.
The similar names and shared flag colours make an easy mix-up. Use the shield and the neighbouring countries as distinguishing clues. Austria and Hungary border both countries, so those two neighbours alone cannot settle the question.
For the capitals, make two complete associations: “Slovakia—Bratislava” and “Slovenia—Ljubljana.” Say each one, cover the text, then answer in reverse: which country has Ljubljana as its capital?
1. Slovenia. 2. Slovenia. 3. Bratislava. 4. Slovakia.
After checking, write the two countries in separate columns. Under each, add the capital, one flag detail and one neighbour that the other country does not share. This gives you several ways to recover the answer when one clue slips your mind.
A correct multiple-choice answer can come from recognition or a guess. After the exercise, close the choices and name both capitals aloud. Then describe the flag shields without looking. Finally, point to each country on a labelled map, cover its name, and repeat.
Come back after a break and try again before reading the comparison. If only the capital is still difficult, spend your next short session on that association. If the locations are mixed up, use Italy and Poland as different map anchors. You do not need to restart an entire continent to work on one pair.
